Technique

  1. Remember the two warm-up exercises.
  2. Do not drop or break the body. Support the frame with the core and the base.
  3. Move from one mid-weight position to the next, not from foot to foot.
  4. Emphasize side steps. All outside partner steps are sideward, as well as the step preceding any outside partner step.
  5. There are two methods of changing position: sliding (outside partner) and rolling (PP).
  6. Do not over lead. Leading is done primarily by weight change. Be able to dance a whole routine without moving your feet. The body actions that go with the steps are the real dancing.

Jive: Change of Places

  1. Do not drop or break the body.
  2. Practice with the free arm straight out to the side and ridiculously straight.
  3. Never be without the barre. An imaginary connection provides reliable stability and leverage.
  4. Turns are on the accented beats (2 and 4)
  5. Torque, angle and rotate the body at all times, independently of the neck.
  6. Focus on connection and spacing.
  7. Toe Heel Swivels: The pressure in the hands alternates between push and pull, but one hand is always doing each.

Beginner

Review Waltz while hearing “1&2&3&” on every measure.

Quickstep

  1. Underturned Natural Spin Turn                     SQQ SSS
  2. Progressive Chasse                                         SQQS S

  6. 1-3 Natural Turn                                             SQQ
  7. Tipple Chasse to Right                                   SQQS QQS
  8. Repeat figures 6-7 around next corner.
    Start over.

Tango

  1. Alternate Two Closed Boxes with Two Open Boxes, using the timing SSQ throughout.
  2. Dance sensuously: the feet are staccato, the body keeps moving (legato).

Rumba: After the Hockey Stick, add 1-3 of Open Basic and two measures of Back Walk. Restart with Alemana.

Review Cha Cha and Samba.

Intermediate

Samba

  1. See Bronze routine through Reverse Turn, especially Solo Spot Voltas.
  2. Use the Tango formula for sensuousness.
  3. Every step is taken as an excuse to dance a hip action. On the right foot the right hip moves forward, side to the right, then back, in a figure eight motion. On the left foot it is to the left.

Viennese Waltz (incorporating inside/outside of turn principles)

  1. Natural Turn, starting and ending facing DC                          2 or 4 Bars
  2. Right Foot Change Step, ending facing DW                           1 Bar
  3. Reverse Turn, starting and ending facing DW                        2 or 4 Bars
  4. Left Foot Change Step, ending facing DC                              1 Bar

Restart.

Review Waltz and Quickstep Double Reverse Spin amalgamations.
